Wildlife Assessments

San Rafael, California

Client: Private

Special Status Species: Northwestern Pond Turtle and Nesting Birds

Sunset supported the repair and expansion of an existing overwater deck within San Rafael Creek, growing the structure from 389 to 676 square feet, under a Section 1600 Streambed Alteration Agreement issued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Sunset’s scope centered on the biological compliance measures specified in the agreement, beginning with a western pond turtle habitat assessment and a nesting bird pre-construction survey. Sunset’s CDFW approved biologists conducted a western pond turtle survey and a nesting bird survey, and provided daily on-site inspections and biological monitoring throughout construction to ensure compliance with all permit conditions. Sunset also managed required agency notifications, including advance notice to CDFW before work began and photographic documentation of the site before and after construction, keeping the project in step with its regulatory obligations from start to finish.
