Stone Pine Farmworker Residential Project

Half Moon Bay, California

Client: City of Half Moon Bay

Special Status Species: California red-legged frog, San Francisco Garter Snake

Sunset was retained by the City of Half Moon Bay to manage the biological compliance aspects of a new farmworker housing community built on a former agricultural parcel adjacent to a native creek and riparian corridor. Because the project was approved under a state mandate for expedited construction — without a full environmental assessment, and with work already underway — Sunset stepped in to establish avoidance and minimization protocols to protect special-status species, including California red-legged frog and San Francisco garter snake. Sunset provided full-time biological construction monitoring, led worker environmental awareness trainings, and coordinated directly with CDFW and USFWS to keep the project compliant without delaying a demanding construction schedule. When a California red-legged frog was encountered on site, Sunset implemented immediate protective measures in coordination with the agencies, allowing work to continue without harm or take. The project was completed successfully in July 2025 with no halt in construction or take of special status species.
